Master The Sounds Of Portuguese
The Open E Vowel Sound
The Open E sound, written as é, is one of the most important vowel sounds in European Portuguese. It is clear, bright, and fully open — similar to the “e” in the English word bed, but slightly more forward and pure.
To produce this sound, open your mouth naturally and relax your jaw. Your lips should not be rounded, and your tongue rests low and forward in the mouth. The sound should feel open and resonant, never tight or reduced.

You’ll hear the Open E in common words such as café, pé, até, médico, and é. In many cases, the written accent (´) signals the open pronunciation, but not always. Listening carefully is essential.
This vowel often carries stress in a word. When stressed, it remains strong and fully articulated. Unlike reduced vowels in European Portuguese, the Open E does not weaken or disappear in natural speech.
Confusing open é with closed ê can change meaning. For example, avó and avô differ by vowel quality, and similar contrasts exist with E sounds.
Mastering the Open E will sharpen your listening skills and help you pronounce everyday words with greater clarity and confidence.
