The U Sound
The U sound in European Portuguese is a strong, high back vowel. It is naturally closed, which means your lips are rounded and your mouth opening is small. Unlike o, the letter u does not have open and closed versions. It stays consistently tight and rounded.
To produce this sound, round your lips forward as if you were gently blowing out a candle. Keep your jaw fairly still and raise the back of your tongue toward the roof of your mouth. The sound should feel focused and compact — never wide or relaxed.
Take care not to confuse this U sound with and English U. This can easily be avoided by simply rounding your lips like an O.

You’ll hear the U sound clearly in words like tu, uma, rua, mundo, and luz. In stressed syllables, it is strong and stable. In fast European Portuguese speech, it may become shorter, but it remains rounded and distinct.
Be careful not to confuse the U sound with the reduced final o, which can sometimes sound similar to English ears. Portuguese u is more rounded and precise.
Mastering the U sound helps you control vowel clarity and rhythm. Practice rounding your lips fully and keeping the sound tight. A clear U makes your pronunciation more confident and authentically European Portuguese.
