Master The Sounds Of Portuguese
Open Vowel Sounds
Open vowel sounds are an important part of European Portuguese pronunciation. These sounds are produced when the mouth opens slightly wider and the tongue sits lower in the mouth. Because of this, open vowels tend to sound clearer and more resonant than their closed counterparts.
In Portuguese, the most common open vowels are á, é, and ó. These sounds often appear in stressed syllables and can change the meaning of a word if pronounced incorrectly. For example, the difference between an open and closed vowel can distinguish two entirely different words, even when the spelling looks very similar.

A common mistake, which can completely change the meaning of a word, is to say the 0 as in “open”, rather than “obstacle”. The name Sónia is a good example.
For English speakers, open vowels may feel easier at first because they are pronounced with a more relaxed mouth position. However, learners still need to pay attention to how wide the mouth opens and where the tongue rests. Small adjustments can make a noticeable difference in how natural the sound is.
Listening carefully and repeating aloud are the best ways to develop control over these vowels. Pay attention to the rhythm of the word and the stressed syllable where the open vowel appears.
In the examples below, focus on the mouth shape and try to match the sound as closely as possible. With practice, open vowels will become a natural part of your Portuguese pronunciation.
