Master The Sounds Of Portuguese
Reduced Vowels in European Portuguese
One of the biggest differences between European Portuguese and many other languages is how vowels behave in unstressed syllables.
In English and European Portuguese, speech is stress-timed. That means rhythm is built around stressed syllables, while unstressed syllables are shortened, softened, and often reduced.
In Portuguese, this reduction is especially noticeable.
Vowels like a, e and o often weaken or change completely:
- e can sound like a soft “uh” or disappear
- o can shift toward a closed “u” sound
For example, words that look clear on the page may sound very different when spoken naturally.

Learners who pronounce every vowel clearly – exactly as written – often sound unnatural, even when their grammar is correct.
Native speakers don’t give equal weight to every syllable. They move quickly through unstressed parts and emphasize only what matters.
That’s what creates the rhythm of real Portuguese.
At FalaPT, you train your ear to hear these reductions – and your mouth to reproduce them naturally.
Because reduced vowels aren’t just a pronunciation detail.
They’re the key to understanding spoken Portuguese
They are also the key to stopping the switch to English and being understood
Practice daily pronunciation with the FalaPT app and stay in Portuguese longer.
Confidence grows with every conversation – helping you make friends and open new doors.
